  4. Pupils should develop their knowledge and understanding of the 
  5. properties, transmission and absorption of sound.
  6.  
  7. Level 1  * know that sounds can be made in a variety of ways.
  8.  
  9. Level 2  * know that sounds are heard when sound reaches the ear.
  10.  
  11.          * be able to explain how musical sounds are heard when sound 
  12.            reaches the ear.
  13.  
  14. Level 3  * know that sounds are produced by vibrating objects and can 
  15.            travel through different materials.
  16.  
  17.          * be able to give a simple explanation of the way in which 
  18.            sound is generated and can pass through different materials. 
  19.  
  20. Level 4  * know that it takes time for sound to travel.
  21.  
  22. Level 5  * understand that the frequency of a vibrating source affects 
  23.            the pitch of the sound it produces.
  24.  
  25.          * understand the relationship between the loudness of the 
  26.            sound and the amplitude of vibration of the source.
  27.  
  28. Level 6  * know that when sound waves travel from one point to another 
  29.            they transfer energy through the medium.
  30.  
  31.          * be able to explain the working of the human ear and some 
  32.            common defects in hearing.
  33.  
  34.          * be able to describe the workings of audio devices, for 
  35.            example, the microphone, loudspeaker and telephone.

  37. Level 7  * know that sound waves can be converted into electrical 
  38.            oscillations, transmitted (as electrical, optical or radio 
  39.            signals) over long distances and converted into sound waves 
  40.            again.

  42. Level 8  * know that a vibrating object has a characteristic 
  43.            fundamental frequency of vibration, and that some systems 
  44.            produce resonant oscillations which can be advantageous and 
  45.            disadvantageous.

  47. Level 9  * understand the use of electronic sound technology, for 
  48.            example, in industrial, medical and social applications.
  49.  
  50. Level 10 * be able to apply a knowledge of wave properties to explain 
  51.            common sound phenomena.
